Pleasantly surprised, really can't complain.. The decor! the food! And the service yep even the service was good; maybe others had different exprisences, but my waitress was very attentive and helpful... And the the food came out relatively fast. Enough said. Also u gotta try the strawberry mochi ice cream, the other flavors aren't as yummy
I've eaten here on multiple occasions and have to say (besides service being incredibly slow) that the sushi leaves much to be desired. It has good potential, if only it was actually fresh! The sashimi always seems aged and slimy.

Foods was ok, but customer service was so bad. I put my name in a waiting list and I was told to wait another 25 minutes. But after 15 minutes later, he said the kitchen was closed. He should have taken care of guests who already were in a list. I felt so terrible and I would not visit there in future.

A classic sushi joint from my college days back in the early 2000s. It's nice to see that it's still around and doing well! Now they have special discounts each day: appetizers on Monday, rolls on Tuesday, etc. It was a bit of a wait when I went on Monday for dinner, and they said for Tuesdays, they recommend reservations because so many people come in for the cheaper rolls. It's all about the rolls here, in my opinion. They've got a big list and there should be something for everyone. They do a nice version of the negi hama and spider rolls. I don't remember the names of the others we order, but it's always tasty. The atmosphere feels like a traditional Japanese restaurant. There's seating at the sushi bar and a few regular tables, but most of the seating is up in an area where you have to remove your shoes and sit on cushions on the floor, which I prefer.

The service is excellent, the food is superb. Very good selection of alcohol with a wide range of sake. They are beat out on price by other sushi restaurants in the area, so that is the reason I gave only four stars, but all other areas deserve five stars.

I had the Nama Chirashi and it was tasty (bed of rice with raw fish on top). This isn't a good place for a leisurely lunch because they close between lunch and dinner and they are quite assertive about hurrying you along if you you're still there near closing time (2 pm). This is also not a good place for a late lunch for the same reason.

It used to be ok, but today we had a waiter called Eric, who basically doesn't give a shit to customers. We waited for half an hour for the food and he never comes to add water or ask about anything. When we wanna check he never cares and was so reluctant to serve us. Very bad experience. Won't go there again.

Heard from a co worker that this is a good place to try out something new. Really like atmosphere of it, you can either sit down at a table or the authentic Japanese way on the floor with your shoes off. It being our first time we tried the table. Four things I enjoyed: Spider roll, dragon roll, edamame appetizer and Canadian roll. I ordered the combination box #2 and was sadly disappointed. The teriyaki sauce on the salmon and chicken was tasteless and cold. It also came with the mixed tempura but I found it to also be flavorless. Still a fan of this place but will try to go for some other things next time around.

Love the food from this restaurant. The service is good and the dining environment is quite comfortable. The price is a little high compared to other Japanese restaurants nearby. Yet, Heisei is still one of my favorite restaurants in town.

Average sushi, but below average to average service. The sushi isn't bad, but isn't great either. I would head to Maru on Chauncey hill if you want sushi - its much better there.

I think a good test of any Asian place is to see how many asian people actually eat there. This place is the ONLY place in Lafayette to find a smaller percentage of white folks than others. Watch out, unfair business practices!! My gf ate dinner with her friends at Heisei today. Before she left, she ordered takeout for three of us and specifically told the server to put it on a different check. When the check arrived ... 18% gratuity was added to the freaking takeout as well. Let me break this down: For here - $11.95 udon. With 18% tips and tax it comes out to $15. Takeout- 2x $18.50 unagi rice + $12.95 teriyaki chicken= $49.95. With tax, takeout it's $54. Expected total: $69 or maybe $75 if I felt generous and tipped 10% for takeout Was asked(forced) to pay: $92!!!! They tipped themselves $20+ for a $12 bowl of noodles. When she pointed this out, the manager told her "it's part of the check" and refused to refund the charge. As for the food it was nothing to rave about. Heisei serves salty, unappetizing food, which is already overpriced and then further rips customers off with gratuity on takeout. I don't even know why people go there anymore. Avoid!!

For West Lafayette this place probably offers the best sushi in town! They have authentic Japanese-style seating where patrons must remove their shoes before sitting down at the tables. They do offer a few "normal" tables in the middle of the restaurant along with the sushi bar where you are allowed to keep your shoes on but I think it's always nice to try something new. The restaurant is kept relatively clean and no one has had any problems with their shoes gone missing. This place is on the more expensive side since it's probably hard to come by fresh fish in Indiana. I usually order the Tekka Don (all tuna sashimi over sushi rice) and it costs around $19. They also offer standard sushi rolls (i.e. spicy tuna, california, spider roll, futomaki etc. which range anywhere from $5-$13), nigiri (two pieces of sashimi over sushi rice--$3-$5), cooked food (i.e. bento boxes, edamame, sunomono, udon, curry, soba, and ramen), and desserts (i.e. mochi ice cream, green tea/custard pudding, and regular green tea or vanilla ice cream topped with red bean). If you want to save some money- try coming during their lunch hours (11:30-1:30PM Mon-Sat) where everything is A LOT cheaper! They are closed on Sundays and also close between their lunch and dinner shifts (dinner starts at 5:00PM daily). Overall, this place is worth a try if you're craving sushi and stuck in West Lafayette!

I went there this past Friday because me and my girlfriend were really craving sushi. Her mother is Japanese and we had heard that this place was pretty authentic so we were excited. There was a bit of a wait which was frustrating but I guess is to be expected on a Friday night. We were hoping for a japanese server but ended up getting the only white guy in the place lol. He ended up being very friendly and knowledgeable and we were very pleased with his service. We got some soups along with our sushi and everything tasted fantastic. We plan on going again but on a weekday next time. 4 stars only because they don't have a very efficient waiting list and there were actually people waiting outside.

Very very good sushi in my opinion.... The place is very interesting and you can either sit in a regular table or in the floor. If you choose the floor you can sit in the cushions or put your legs in the pit under the table... Very cool in my opinion. I had four different rolls and the taste was great on all of them. The sake selection is great as well but the best part was the service. It's not cheap at all that's for sure but it's worth your money....

Had lunch here with a couple of workmates. They're not big on the whole "raw-fish" sushi thing, but I assured them that there would be plenty of cooked items to choose from. It's a spacious, well-lit open room, and there was a fairly sizable lunch crowd that Friday. I had the curry tonkatsu & was satisfied. Excellent breaded pork loin, with the standard Japanese-style curry sauce. Good toothsome short-grain rice & a huge portion overall. Hot green tea, not too bitter. My friends had teriyaki chicken and a tempura special. They looked happy. Service started out stellar, but then our waitress became very difficult to find, especially when we were looking to pay the check. Odd. I'll be back to try the sushi - that's the real reason for Japanese restaurants, isn't it? Also they have tatami rooms. My kids are really big on kneeling while they eat, so I think they'll get a kick out of this.

I used to love Heisei. I used to go there up to twice a week, when I lived in West Lafayette. I found today's lunch so very, very disappointing. I ordered the chicken teriyaki combo because I felt like some good old-fashioned fake Japanese food, and didn't want my pancreas to jump out of my body and kill me as I downed a mountain of sushi. (You try being diabetic and going to a Japanese restaurant.) Our meal started off with hot green tea, which was tasty, and some miso soup. Unlike Asahi, they had tofu in their miso, and it was yummy. Unfortunately, the deliciousness ended there, for me. The chicken was tough. It tasted overcooked. The "stir-fry" vegetables were limp and tasted like a gym sock. The salad was okay but there was barely any dressing on it. The sushi tasted like something I could have gotten across the parking lot at Pay Less. The tempura was lifeless and pretty much flavorless. The service wasn't that great, either. While they were busy (Wednesday lunch hour), they had quite a few servers. We had to wait quite a while for anything we asked for specifically, like water or extra tea. I was so thirsty I ended up rummaging around in my bag for a bottle of water I happened to have, since I figured I wasn't going to get a glass of water anytime soon. I hope Heisei picks it up soon. I remember their food fondly from a few years back and would love to relive that experience of delicious, fresh Japanese food in the Lafayette area.

Definitely the best sushi in town (not sure if that's saying much, but still!). I have had a variety of nigiri and cut rolls as well as an eel and rice dish. All were lovely. The rolls themselves are a little small, though. So if you have a hankering for sushi, order a few different rolls to keep you filled - but this can easily add up to in dollars to a pricey bill. The wait staff is a little standoffish as well, but definitely not terrible.

We like Heisei's a lot although our standards have changed a bit since we moved to West Lafayette. Our favorite thing to do now is to get takeout sushi from Heisei, and we ask them to keep all the paraphernalia they throw in for free: napkins, chopsticks, soy sauce packets and so on. They are happy to oblige, which makes us like them even more.

Heisei saved my life during my 3 years at Purdue. Heisei is the only decent japanese place near campus. I don't necessarily recommend the sashimi as this is Indiana, and water is no where to be found. But if you do eat it, I heard the fish get delivered on Wednesday, so it'll be the freshest that day, and try not go eat any on Tuesday. Everytime I go, I usually order the Boston or Alaska roll. And everyone should try the new spider roll at least once. It may not look tasty, but it is. Their nabiyaki udon isn't bad either. My bf likes the ramen and the katsu curry, which is only on the lunch menu, but they serve it during dinner as well. There may be a wait on wkends for dinner, but you should definately come during lunch if you can. The lunch combo comes w/ sushi, beef teriyaki, salad, fruit, and miso soup all for $7.95. That same combo at night is probably around $15. But overall, Heisei is good. I actually miss it at times now that I graduated.

Heisei does the typical American Japanese food, and for a Midwestern town, they do it quite well. I highly recommend going for lunch if you have a craving for teriyaki (the prices are a steal), but the sushi prices are the same all day. The New Spider Roll is delicious as is the French roll (shrimp tempura and asparagus roll).
(4)
Melissa W.
I really like Heisei. They serve really good Japanese food. Try their Shabu Shabu (raw meats and vegetables that you dip into boiling fish broth). It's my favorite. Their sushi is always good, although their new way of making the New Spider Roll just doesn't do it for me. It's the only place I know in Lafayette that you can get Katsu Curry (fried pork with rice and sweet curry). I love their Agaedashi Tofu. It's so silky, yet has a fried outer layer that's just delicious. There are some good sushi places popping up around West Lafayette, but I feel that Heisei doesn't compare in their entrees!!! Service isn't that great if you go with a group of people and if it's busy. I suggest going during a weekday or during lunch.

W. Lafayette is pretty lucky to have this place I think :) There's not many places in this town where I daydream later on about something I ate there. The thing I daydream about even now is the NEW SPIDER ROLL. It has soft shell crab tempura on top and is soooo very tasty. Next time I go I'm gonna spend my money on two of these. I think it's def the best roll on the menu. Unfortunately I was not too crazy about the CRAZY ROLL. The most expensive roll on the sushi menu but only cuz it's meaty. A really big roll and a lot of rice but it really didn't do it for me. Save your money for the NEW SPIDER ROLL! Check the rolls out in my pictures, but focus on the lower right corner, can't miss the new spider roll, it's got heaping goodness on top :)

I'm surprised to be the first to review Heisei. I have never been here without a good crowd. This is especially true for lunch time were they offer affordable lunch combos - lunch combo A being my favorite. For $7 I can get a healthy portion of teriyaki beef, vegetable tempura, rice, and an orange slice. Dinner gets a bit more expensive but the food is worth the cost.

I think the new Maru Sushi has outdone Heisei as far as sushi goes. Heisei is still decent, but I'm going to have to subtract a star because I'd much rather go to Maru. Maru has better sushi, better prices, and better service!

Heisei is my favorite Japanese restaurant in WL. The food is SO delicious and I have always been pleased with it. Some of my favorites include: seasonal pickles with rice (so yummy), agedashi tofu, katsu curry, and my fiancé usually gets the combination platter with the beef. Their bento boxes are awesome because you get a little taste of so many things and really, all of it is super tasty. Their sushi is also quite good. I can't comment too closely on the service because we usually get take out. There was one time we called on a Friday night and they were so busy that they weren't taking pick up orders anymore. So now, if it's a Friday night we will call around 5 and ask to have a pick up order ready around 7 and they are always accommodating with the food ready to go when we requested it. They do seem to get crazy busy on Friday and Saturday nights so just keep that in mind because the waits can get pretty long. Overall, I highly recommend heisei to any lover of authentic Japanese cuisine.
